It's time to rethink the approach to protecting our health and wellness. The world is facing several major health crises. Every year, new devastating diseases appear and the medical community cannot respond fast enough. What's more, scientists tell us the race to develop newer and better drugs and antibiotics is not a race we are going to win.
A New Approach
Given these challenges, we must rethink our approach. Medicine is generally a reactionary science. In one respect this is wonderful. If we are hurt badly we despearately want the medical team in the ER to react...and react well. But, with lasting or chronic disease threats, the reactionary mode is less than a perfect solution. More often than not, drugs are used to treat symptoms, and not the origins or causes of disease.
The first step is clear. After years of research and study in the field of immunology, I am convinced that strengthening the body's immune system must be our first and overriding goal to proactively support the health of our bodies. Few of us realize how many invasions our immune systems repel each day. From the common cold to cancer, the immune system plays a vital role in preventing or reversing nearly every minor and major health problem. There is no doubt that immune system support will be a key component of effective medicine in the next century of science.
Fundamental problems arise from fundamental assumptions:
We have some fundamental assumptions about our health that often blind us. It is easy to assume that our health is perfect because we don't feel ill. This is like driving a care that is low on oil and waiting until the engine begins to dry out, make horrendous noises, and seize. A bit absurd right?
All too often, we do the same to our bodies. We go along eating whatever we choose whenever we want it.
Exercise is a great idea...one we'll start. oh next week . We feel pretty good. Then one day, yuck, ouch, darn, we feel like we've been hit by a raging bull. Better call the doctor.
I call this the "Plumbing Model" of Medicine. We wait until our health starts "leaking" and then expect the physician to prescribe that perfect little pill to make it all better. Later we return to the doctor's office for another try. Seeking out one specialist after another to no avail is a situation almost all of us are familiar with, either personally or from watching someone else go through the experience. Make no mistake, Western Medicine has its vast strengths. It simply can't keep up with the long-term chronic "life style" challenges we continue to put before it.
A Healthy Opportunity:
What does this all mean to those who see themselves as the picture of health? The wellness window of opportunity is one that could close at any time.
We are healthy mainly because of the vigor of our immune system. Instead of taking health for granted, we can bolster and insure vigourous healthy by supporting it with transfer factors and other nutrients that support optimal immune system function.
