I remember back about 15 years ago when I first got involved in Amway, I would attend local hotel meetings and major events around the country, and would see the "heavy hitters" and their lifestyles being flaunted in front of us.
Leaving events like this, I would feel motivated to go out and chase down as many people as I could get in front of. My personality is the type that isn't afraid to step up to people, strike up a conversation, and ultimately lead to prospecting that individual for my business.
The problem with that approach is that 85% of the people out here don't have my type of personality, but this is the #1 approach being taught by network marketers. Teaching this technique is a set up for failure for 8.5 out of 10 people, yet everyone I would produce in my business was taught this technique because that was all I knew.
The other issue that nobody ever told me about is that approximately 10% of the people out here are entrepreneurs, and VERY FEW of them understand network marketing to be a legitimate industry. This is huge because when you're in a business that involves bringing in entrepreneurs as one of the elements needed for success, it is important to assess this quality up front, as well as identify if they are resistant to network marketing before we even talk.
Unfortunately, I had to learn this the hard way by taking on massive amounts of rejection when I would contact a friend or family member, maybe someone I met out at the mall, or picked up a business card somewhere and contacted someone. Even if they agreed to meet with me, the odds were already stacked against me because I was ill-equipped to pre-qualify these people based on the criteria previously mentioned.
Network marketers defend this approach vehemently because they see their upline has succeeded doing it this way, so it must obviously work. Yes, it does work for about 5-10% of those who participate in this industry. So what about the other 90-95% of the people? If they aren't equipped with the tools necessary to fit their personality type as well as ways to get in front of people who actually want what they have to offer, why would you expect them to succeed?
Network marketers are digging for gold, but just like the California gold rush, only a few people were able to strike it rich FINDING GOLD.
Guess who actually got rich during the gold rush? It was the people selling the picks and shovels, not the people digging for the gold!
If you want to make wealth in network marketing in today's society, you must first learn how to first sell picks and shovels (information) and supplement that effort by digging for gold.
THAT'S THE "SECRET". These are the "new" rules of the game.
Back 15 years ago, it was unheard of for someone to be involved in multiple network marketing opportunities. Today, this is very common because people can see that buying products from people is taking over from buying them at a store. So, they want to get in position to get as much of the pie as they can.
Back 15 years ago, people in network marketing were insulated by their upline from gaining access to tools outside of their companies, let alone selling them for profits. Today, selling information on the front end about how to succeed in this industry is BIG BUSINESS and provides immediate cashflow while still searching for that gold.
Stop playing by the old rules.
Mark Twain said that you get rich by knowing where everyone is going and get their FIRST. Trust me, playing by the "new" rules is much more fun (and profitable).
